Young Graduate - Master in Chemicals / Materials Engineering (RBM)

Umicore is looking for masters in Engineering and (applied) sciences, to join in its Technical Young Graduates Program (TYGP). With this program, Umicore prepares starting engineers for a clearly predefined management position in a technical field. Required skills differ depending on the hiring business unit, but all TYG's will be coached during a specifically designed development program spread over different units and locations worldwide. As a TYG you will be given the opportunity to develop your personal and professional knowledge, skills and network, by attending Umicore seminars and networking events. During the entire TYGP, an experienced mentor supports you. The Technical Young Graduate program focuses on learning through experience. This is further supported by a dedicated learning track in order to boost your personal development. It consists of 4 residential courses: Teamwork & Communication, Presentation skills, Personal Effectiveness and Project Management. By connecting to colleagues in similar roles throughout the program, you will capitalize on each other's learning. Depending on the hiring business unit, required profiles and skills can differ. At the moment, we are looking for 4 Technical Young Graduates for the units Cobalt & Specialty Materials, Rechargeable Battery Materials and Umicore Precious Metals Refining. Hiring Unit - Umicore Rechargeable Battery Materials Umicore Rechargeable Battery Materials (RBM) provides its customers with the best cathode active materials, which leads to greater mobility and a reliable source f energy. One in five Li-Ion batteries ever produced for portable electronics contains Umicore materials. Our materials are used in the hybrid automotive industry to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide. Today, people are constantly on the move; to meet friends and relatives, to grow their business, to enjoy all aspects of life. This constant drive calls for a trusted source of energy. Our goal is to develop solutions to ensure mobility in tomorrow's world. Umicore Rechargeable Battery Materials is looking for Technical Young Graduates, to start with a training period in Belgium (Olen) and relocate afterwards to the Rechargeable Battery Materials operations in Korea (Cheonan) or China (Jiangmen). Traineeship At the start of the Technical Young Graduate Program, a specific-tailor made traineeship program will be drawn up, depending on the background and interest of the TYG. In the following paragraph, you can find an exemple of a possible traineeship program. You will start at Group Research and Development (Belgium) to get acquainted with the management and execution of process-related R&D projects (proof-of-concept and feasibility, development and upscaling of new production, processes). These projects can be related to rechargeable battery materials, but on top of that projects linked to other Umicore business (e.g. recycling and refining) are in scope. After an initial 6 months period in our Group Research and Development department, you will move through two or three other positions you will be holding over the course of the program. You will have the opportunity to acquire specific competences in an operational environment, for example in the business unit Cobalt & Specialty Materials where you will contribute to productivity, quality and process improvements. As a next step in your trainee program, you will be allocated during 6 months to the Engineering Department where you follow up small technical capital expenditure projects. Finally, an assignment will be scheduled in the Business Unit Rechargeable Battery Materials, where you join the Engineering Department and participate to the commissioning of one of the large expansion projects., As a member of the Process Control team in Korea or China, you assist in supervising the firing process of cathode materials. You participate to process improvements projects dealing with powder handling, firing technology, purity control, sampling, … You will support testing campaigns in mass production, measuring process parameters and use statistical skills to analyze data and report conclusions.

You are part of the RBM Engineering group and participate to the commissioning of one of the RBM expansion projects (100'sMEuro in the next 3 years), following the testing of equipment, finalizing the safety and working procedures with the Production team, testing and fine-tuning the process together with the RBM Process control team until internal qualification of the new capacity. You will also be involved in the project management (scheduling, coordination with different departments,…), You join the Process Development Research & Development team in Korea that is in charge of improving existing or developing new process routes for the synthesis of cathode materials and/or its precursors. You take part of the process projects focusing on specific aspects of the cathode flowsheet. You will perform both theoretical as well as lab/pilot experiments to validate the concept before moving into upscaling trials (up to industrial pilot-scale). You use your analytical, statistical and communication skills to analyze the data, define the next steps and report the conclusions., For the business unit Rechargeable Battery Materials, Umicore is looking for masters in Chemical, Materials or Engineering, who are fluent in English and preferably speak Chinese or Korean. The TYG shows a keen interest in technology, industrial equipment and plant operations. We expect TYG to be a team player, flexible and committed with a positive 'can do' spirit and have a focus on results. The TYG is ready to relocate to Korea (Cheonan) or China (Jiangmen).
