Job description
In the framework of the new FWO-SBO project "MoCCHa-CT" we have an open position for a PhD student within the Image Processing and Interpretation research group (
The challenge for the PhD student of IPI within this project will be to improve the capabilities of Digital volume correlation (DVC) in the context of dynamic µCT scanning (4D-µCT). DVC is the image analysis problem of estimating internal motion of objects that deform through time by comparing 3D data sets acquired at different points in time.
The PhD student will closely collaborate with a researcher that focuses on continuous-time dynamic µCT acquisition and reconstruction. As a team, you will have access to a state-of-the-art X-ray imaging facility where pioneering work on laboratory-based 4D-µCT is being performed. This forms a unique opportunity that will allow the applicant to explore the full potential of the developed DVC algorithms. Furthermore, the applicant will be embedded in a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers in the context of the "MoCCHa-CT" project; This team consists of experts in image analysis, image restoration, GPU-accelerated scientific image processing, X-ray imaging hardware, tomographic reconstruction and material sciences experts. The project is a tight collaboration between several academic partners at UGent and the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, ETH, Switzerland, and has an economic finality supported by several industrial partners. We offer an employment contract of
2 years with the possibility for an extension of 2 additional years, starting between May and October 2018, depending on the availability of the successful candidate.

Profile of the candidate
Applicants should have:
+ A high interest in image/signal processing and acquisition, scientific computing, and estimation theory
+ Good programming skills in scientific programming languages (C++, Python) are highly recommended. Experience with GPU programming and 3D imaging/reconstruction are a plus
+ An independent and well-organized working style, demanding high quality of own work.
+ Well-developed social skills directed towards working in an interdisciplinary team, excellent interpersonal and communicative skills.
+ Very good to excellent English language skills (verbally and written).
