European Policy Communications Manager, Microsoft Public Affairs

On Microsoft’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) Public Affairs team, you’ll join a group of communications professionals focused on telling the stories to demonstrate the company’s commitment to building trust, and contribute to solving some of the world’s big challenges. The Public Affairs team is also part of the broader Microsoft Communications team, so you’ll join a large, diverse group of professionals focused on innovative communications with significant opportunities for career growth.

The Public Affairs communications team works on issues at the intersection of technology, public policy, and societal impact. We manage external communications on topics that drive daily news cycles and public discussion about the impact of technology around the world. This includes work to increase the understanding of issues like privacy, cybersecurity, ethical use of technology, environmental sustainability, accessibility, and philanthropy.

In this role, you will report to and work hand-in-hand with the Director of European Policy Communications to manage communications for a broad range of corporate communications and public policy issues for Microsoft in the EU. You’ll be working closely with colleagues on the Public Affairs team, our European Government Affairs team as well as the EMEA regional communications team and in-country leads across Europe to support issues-based communications. You will tell stories, lead communications moments and announcements, manage reputation impacting reactive issues, and engage reporters. You will also have a passion and relevant experience with digital storytelling, including development and distribution of content, such as video, long-form features, blog posts and graphics, social media management and performance analytics.

The role is based at Microsoft’s EU office in Brussels, Belgium.

Responsibilities

  • You’ll help develop and execute communications strategies to help advance Microsoft’s European policy work in Brussels and across the region.
  • You will provide communications support to the European Government Affairs team and senior leadership including the Vice President for European Government Affairs, helping shape our message and tell our story to increase the impact of the team’s work.
  • You will take a key role in developing a steady cadence of external storytelling opportunities, including external-facing events and in particular developing creative digital content that drives storytelling across a variety of formats on Microsoft’s owned channels and social media.
  • In addition, you’ll oversee every aspect of social media management and online campaigns and help cultivate and manage our online community.
  • You’ll help to manage existing relationships with Brussels-based media and develop new relationships as needed with key media in the communities where we are working.
  • As part of the broader Public Affairs team, you will help drive integrated execution of communications campaigns, in close collaboration with other teams in CELA.
  • Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and at least six years of professional experience in policy, corporate, non-profit or related communications, preferably gained in Brussels and working across Europe. In-house and/or agency experience is a plus
  • Experience in driving proactive and impactful communications campaigns and media relations as well as crisis and issues management
  • Proven track record for new, innovative earned and owned media approaches and smart risk taking
  • Strong understanding of evolving communications trends and a passion for creative storytelling in today’s digital environment.
  • Experience with creating content that performs well for online audiences as well as working with creators of content including long-form stories, videos and graphics. Current knowledge of digital communications techniques, social media engagement, amplification and measurement
  • Exceptional written communications skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and across organizational boundaries and manage complex issues in an incredibly fast-changing environment
